Membership Secretary – General Job Description

BSI, a global non-profit, focused on promoting public and scientific interest in research, development, preservation, education and love for bromeliads, is seeking an enthusiastic, outgoing, volunteer to serve as BSI Membership Secretary. While this is an unpaid volunteer position it offers an invaluable opportunity to:

  • Meet and serve great people from different cultures around the world
  • Develop a valuable and extensive professional network with bromeliad hobbyists, horticulture professionals and commercial buyers and sellers of bromeliads.
  • Gain great experience and grow your passion of bromeliads
  • Travel to great and exciting places for BSI conferences and board meetings


This volunteer will serve as an officer on the BSI Board of Directors. General responsibilities are outlined in the BSI Bylaws, (Standing Rule 7 (a-h) found at: ) Also included are the following duties/responsibilities of this officer:


  • Interacting frequently with members as they join or renew or leave membership,
  • Responding to member/customer inquiries regarding membership issues, and events such as the BSI World Conferences, by phone and email,
  • Performing frequent data entry to maintain an up-to-date member database,
  • Providing detailed membership bi-monthly revenue reports to the BSI Treasurer,
  • Providing timely and accurate journal mailing lists to mail service provider, affiliate reports to affiliate chair, database updates to the webmaster for posting of the member directory,
  • Providing September 1 annual member regional representation report to nominations chair,
  • Providing general leadership and promoting and supporting the board regarding membership recruitment and retention trends, needs and activities,
  • Serving on various ad hoc committees of the board where skills will be of value to the BSI,
  • Providing data analysis and recommendations to the board on member related trends.


Helpful knowledge and skills include:

  • A customer service focus with the ability to work in a cooperative, tactful and diplomatic manner with the board, affiliates, customers, members and the public,
  • Considerable administrative and organizational skills,
  • Knowledge of recruitment, retention and outreach strategies to increase membership,
  • Knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping principles and practices,
  • Software savvy to include use of database, accounting, and word processing software,
  • Ability to maintain, organize, interpret, analyze data and report trends and recommendations,
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with timelines,
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information and exercise discretion with such.
