SADDLEBACK VALLEY BROMELIAD SOCIETY

Mission Viejo, California USA

Meeting Time/Place

The Saddleback Valley Bromeliad Society meets the first Thursday of each month.
The next official meeting will be February 2, 2012 at 7:00 pm.

Meeting is held at the Norman Murray Community and Senior Center at 24932 Veterans Way, Mission Viejo, California USA.

OUR FEATURED PROGRAM: PREVIEW OF UPCOMING ATTRACTIONS FROM JOE['S FABULOUS NEWSLETTER .....We have enjoyed Guillermo led trips to South and Central America. But did you know that he has expanded to Africa? This month's speaker, Larry Farley, will share with us a plant exploration trip there with an added wek for animals in Kruger National Park. Larry explains, "Our visit explored the west coast of South Africa from Cape Town to Namibia in August and septemver, the beginning of spring. This is the timing for spectacular flower blooming. Aloes were a real treat to see and enjoy as well as the many African bulbs. Our travels were mostly far from any towns and we were escorted by an Environment Policeman, thus we were able to visit many private farmlands that are normally off limits. The trip to Kruger National Park was very memorable with observations of many animals such as Elephants, Cape Buffalo, Lions, Leopards, Rhinos, etc." An example of the many unusual plants we will see is "Hydnora Africana, a parasite on Euphorbias. It was almost 3 inches tall. Our Environmental Policeman was able to identify any plant observed. He was not just knowledgeable but could locate a small 50 foot area containing unique succulents within 400 feet of the road."

LIBRARY
Want to learn even more? Here is your chance. Check out a book and read up on many interesting ideas. Or ask the attending bromeliad experts that one question that has been bugging you! We love to talk about Bromeliads! Our new librarian, Mitch reports, "We have acquired a new book for our library: 'The Biology of the Bromeliads' by David Benzing. This is a must read item and is a recommended reading prior to another book by the same author: "Bromeliaceae, Profile of an Adaptive Radiation". That book was acquired recently and covers evolution of diversity in Bromeliaceae. It is considered a bible (690 pages) by those who KNOW." One write up called this book "the most authoritative, thorough overview of bromeliads, their nature and their environment."

INFORMATION
This is your chance to ask your fellow bromeliophiles questions in your search for truth and inspiration. And have fun.
