Genus: Aechmea

Aechmea is a genus of the subfamily Bromelioideae and is the third largest genus is Bromeliaceae with over 240 species.The name comes from the Greek word aichme (a spear). Aechmea has eight subgenera, with species distributed from Mexico through South America. Most of the species in this genus are epiphytes, but many are terrestrial and lithophytes (rock dwellers).
