Genus: Alcantarea

Alcantarea is a genus of the subfamily Tillandsioideae. It is named for Dom Pedro d Alcantara, second Emperor of Brazil. Alcantarea was re-established to genus status from within Vriesea in 1995, with all species endemic to Brazil. Most species are large, tank forming plants, growing terrestrially on steep rock inselbergs and in stony terrain.
