Genus: Ananas

Ananas is a genus of the subfamily Bromelioideae. The word Ananas is derived from the Guarani name for the pineapple, via Portuguese. In most Old World languages, pineapple is called ananas. The genus is terrestrial and native to both South America and Central America, where many man-made hybrids have been produced for mass cultivation and harvesting of the pineapple fruit. The genus now contains only three recognised natural species.

Number of accepted species in this genus is 3 (source: species counts in the Encyclopaedia of Bromeliads).
