Genus: CryptanthusCryptanthus is a genus of the subfamily Bromelioideae. The genus name is from the Greek words cryptos (hidden) and anthos (flower). In 2017, thirty species were transferred into three new genera - Forzzaea, Hoplocryptanthus and Rokauksykia - based on morphological and phylogenetic studies (Leme, Heller, Zizka & Halbritter. 2017). All species of Cryptanthus are endemic to Brazil where they grow as terrestrials, mainly on shaded, moist, forest floors. The common horticultural name for a Cryptanthus is Earth Star.Number of accepted species in this genus is 67 (source: species counts in the Encyclopaedia of Bromeliads). |
